Recently the UKIPO confirmed at the Chartered Institute of Trademark Attorneys CITMA Spring Conference, that there has been a surge in UK trade mark applications following Brexit.

Comparing statistics from 2020 to 2021, there has been nearly a 50% rise in UK trademark applications and a 150% in design applications.

Evolving from the separation of EU and UK intellectual property rights following Brexit as of 1st January 2021. This means that all EU trademarks are no longer be valid in the UK but applicants with EU trademarks do have until the 30th September 2021 to file their UK Trademarks application and their designs will be protected by the IPO until this date. GOV.UK is urging applicants to make their submissions as soon as possible, to meet the deadline as turnaround times to process can vary.

For criteria required when applying for a trademark, please visit the .GOV.UK website – Their website page offers advice on how to make an application and what details are required, including do’s and don’ts, how classification operates with Goods in classes of 1 to 34 and Services in classes of 35 to 45, plus the cost for registering UK Trademarks.
